We have bought more than 30 lifetime deals on AppSumo since 2022. One of those tools has already shut down.
We have also used the refund window once. It cleared without a single follow-up question.
AppSumo updated its vendor-shutdown protection on August 31, 2026, adding a new membership tier with double the coverage window most competing reviews still do not mention.
This review covers what redeeming a bundle, requesting a refund, and losing a tool to a shutdown actually looks like, based on our own purchase history.
We will walk through what changed under the new guarantee and what it means for buyers right now.
AppSumo is a real marketplace with real trade-offs. The savings are genuine, and so is the risk that a tool you paid for once stops existing.
This review shows you both sides from the buyer’s seat, not the sales page. Our companion piece, the best AppSumo deals worth buying right now, covers specific current offers.
Is AppSumo Worth It?
AppSumo is a legitimate lifetime-deal marketplace, founded in 2010, with a 60-day no-questions refund window on most listings.
It is worth using if you buy carefully and treat every purchase as a bet, not a guarantee.
One tool from our own 30-plus purchases has already shut down. Vendor shutdowns are a real, documented risk on this platform, not a rare edge case.
Spread your purchases across tools you would still be fine losing.
What AppSumo Actually Is
AppSumo is a software marketplace based in Austin, Texas. Noah Kagan founded it in 2010.
Early-stage SaaS companies list one-time lifetime licenses instead of monthly subscriptions. Discounts run up to 95 percent off the normal price, according to AppSumo’s about page.

The company reports more than 1.5 million customers. Cumulative buyer savings sit above 550 million dollars since launch.
New deals go live daily across categories like AI writing tools, social media scheduling apps, lead generation software, and general productivity tools.
That is based on what we see browsing the marketplace regularly, not a published cadence AppSumo states anywhere.
The trade is straightforward. A vendor gets a fast wave of paying users and public feedback.
You get software at a fraction of its subscription price, permanently, as long as the vendor keeps operating. That last clause matters.
It is the part every buyer needs to internalize before spending a dollar.
How Redeeming a Bundle Actually Works
We have redeemed both single-tool deals and multi-tool bundles. The exact steps differ by vendor, and nobody explains that clearly before you buy.
Some codes activate automatically at checkout. Others require a new account on the vendor’s site, or pasting the code into settings after signup.
In our experience redeeming a five-tool AI and automation bundle, every tool redeemed cleanly on the first attempt.
Those three redemption patterns, and what to do when a code fails to apply, are worth knowing before you buy your first bundle.
Clean redemption is not universal across every deal on the platform. It matches what the Q&A tab on individual deal pages consistently shows.
Active, responsive vendors tend to have the smoothest redemption process, because they have already fixed the rough edges other buyers reported.
The same pattern holds across other categories we have bought into, including AI video generator tools and graphic design tools built for social content.
Vendors that ship regular updates outside AppSumo tend to onboard lifetime-deal buyers just as smoothly as their paying subscribers.
The practical lesson: redeem every code the same day you buy it, not weeks later. A silent failure caught past the refund window leaves you with no recourse.
If a bundle fits how you already work, browse current AppSumo deals and redeem your first code the same day you buy it.

The 60-Day Refund Window, Used For Real
AppSumo’s refund policy states that a refundable purchase gets a full refund within the window listed on its deal page, most commonly 60 days.

That comes directly from AppSumo’s Help Center refund policy.
Some listings, particularly digital downloads, are excluded entirely. Check the Deal Terms section before assuming a purchase qualifies.
We have used this window once. The request took under a minute through the Products page in our AppSumo account.
No explanation was required beyond selecting a reason from a dropdown. The refund posted back to our payment method within the stated timeframe.
Not one follow-up email asked us to justify the decision. That matches AppSumo’s own instructions: select the product, choose a reason, confirm, according to AppSumo’s refund request guide.
The credit processes automatically unless fraud-prevention checks flag the account. One detail most reviews skip: refunds are final.
Once you confirm one, you lose access immediately. If that product later leaves the marketplace entirely, you cannot simply buy it back.
Treat the 60-day window as a real evaluation period, not a safety net you can revisit after the fact.
What Happens When a Vendor Shuts Down
This is the part of AppSumo ownership nobody enjoys, and it has happened to us directly. One tool from our purchase history shut down after the refund window closed.
AppSumo’s protection here is called the We Got Your Back Guarantee. It was substantially updated on August 31, 2026, according to AppSumo’s current guarantee terms.
Most reviews still describe the older, simpler version of this policy. The current terms are worth stating precisely.
If a Select, LaunchPad, or Radar product shuts down inside your standard refund window, you get a full cash refund regardless of membership status.
Past that window, protection depends on your Plus status, the product’s tag, and the Coverage Period set at purchase.
- Coverage Period on Plus Pro Annual purchases: 24 months from the purchase date.
- Coverage Period on any other plan, including no Plus membership: 12 months from the purchase date.
- Plus Customer, Select or LaunchPad product closes within the Coverage Period: 100 percent of the purchase price back in AppSumo Credits.
- Non-Plus Customer, Select product closes within 12 months of purchase: 50 percent of the purchase price back in AppSumo Credits.
- Non-Plus Customer, LaunchPad or Radar product closes at any point past the refund window: no credit available, regardless of how soon it closes.
- Non-Plus Customer, Select product closure happens after 12 months: no credit available.
That LaunchPad gap is worth noting on its own.
Plus membership is the only way to get any post-window protection on a LaunchPad product. Non-Plus buyers get zero credit for those closures no matter when they happen.
Our own shutdown happened well outside the refund window. We were not enrolled in Plus at the time of that specific purchase, so no credit applied.
That outcome lines up exactly with the policy as written. It is not a complaint about AppSumo’s process, just a real example of what the fine print means in practice.
The practical takeaway: if you buy Select-tagged deals regularly and want real downside protection, the math now favors Plus Pro Annual.
It doubles your protection window on every purchase made while that plan is active.
Is AppSumo Plus Worth Buying?
AppSumo currently sells three Plus tiers, according to the live AppSumo Plus pricing page.
Plus Monthly runs $12 a month. Plus Annual runs $99 a year. Plus Pro Annual runs $199 a year.
All three include a 10 percent discount on every deal, early access to new listings, and faster support response times.
Plus Annual and Plus Pro Annual also add $100 a year in store credit, issued as $25 coupons every 90 days. Plus Monthly does not include that credit.
We are not currently a Plus member, since our own buying volume has not made the math clear-cut either way.
Plus Pro Annual is the newer addition. Its main advantage over standard Plus Annual is the doubled 24-month Coverage Period under the We Got Your Back Guarantee described above.
Whether that extra $100 a year is worth it depends heavily on purchase volume and whether you buy Select-tagged deals.
A common pricing claim about the bundled KingSumo and SendFox tools does not hold up, which changes whether AppSumo Plus is actually worth the annual fee for most buyers.
How to Vet a Deal Before Buying
Across 30-plus purchases, our own filtering process has stayed the same. Check the vendor’s own site before checking AppSumo’s deal page.
Confirm the product genuinely solves a problem you already have, rather than one the marketing copy just described well. A few additional checks are worth running every time.
- Founder activity on the Q&A tab. A vendor answering questions daily is a stronger signal of long-term survival than any star rating.
- Review count and recency. A deal with fewer than 100 reviews, or one that only launched in the last 30 days, carries more uncertainty than an established listing.
- Whether the product is tagged Select, LaunchPad, or Radar. Select products get the strongest We Got Your Back coverage; Radar products get none past the standard refund window.
- The actual tier you need today, not one you might grow into. Tier upsells are common, and buying two tiers higher than your current usage wastes money on this platform.
None of these checks guarantee a deal survives. Together, they meaningfully cut the odds of buying into a product that disappears within the year.
This matters most in crowded categories where new entrants launch faster than any single vendor can prove it will last, including email marketing tools and TikTok analytics platforms.
AppSumo Pricing in 2026
| Plan | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Individual lifetime deals | Roughly $24 to $140 for entry tiers, higher for upgraded tiers | Anyone buying software case by case |
| AppSumo Plus Monthly | $12 per month | Testing Plus benefits before committing annually |
| AppSumo Plus Annual | $99 per year | Buyers making 4 or more purchases a year |
| AppSumo Plus Pro Annual | $199 per year | Buyers who want the full 24-month shutdown protection window |
Entry-tier prices on live listings we checked on the AppSumo marketplace ranged from $24 to $139. Higher tiers on the same deals commonly run higher.
AppSumo does not publish a fixed price list beyond individual deal pages, so treat this range as a general guide, not a quote for any specific tool.
Why Lifetime Deals Save Real Money, and Where That Breaks
The math behind AppSumo only works if the tool you bought is one you would have paid a recurring subscription for otherwise.
Across the tools we still actively use from our own purchase history, the savings have run as high as 90 percent.
That tracks with AppSumo’s own advertised discount range of up to 95 percent. The math collapses the moment a tool shuts down or you never open it again.
A deal you paid $69 for and never used again is not a 90 percent discount. It is a $69 loss with extra steps.
Budget for the fact that some of what you buy will end up exactly like that.
AppSumo is not the only place this kind of one-time software discount shows up.
Seasonal roundups like our Halloween SaaS, hosting, and AI tool deals guide cover similar one-time pricing windows outside AppSumo’s own marketplace.
Is AppSumo Legit?
Yes. AppSumo has operated since 2010, discloses its founder and Austin, Texas headquarters publicly, and processes payments through standard providers.
It also publishes a self-service refund policy that we personally tested and confirmed works as described. The platform-level risk is close to zero.
The real risk sits one layer down, at the individual vendor level. A small SaaS company taking a lifetime-deal cash injection is a different bet than an established one.
Some of those companies do not survive. That is product risk, not evidence that AppSumo itself is untrustworthy.
Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions we get asked most often about buying from AppSumo, based on real reader questions and our own purchase history.
Is AppSumo a scam?
No. The clearest proof is the refund itself: we requested one, and the money came back exactly as AppSumo’s policy describes, with no pushback.
A 16-year operating history, a public founder, and a real Austin, Texas headquarters rule out the platform being a scam in any meaningful sense.
What trips people up is vendor risk, not platform risk. Individual startups on the marketplace do shut down sometimes.
That is a real cost to plan for, not evidence AppSumo itself is dishonest.
What happens if a tool I bought on AppSumo shuts down?
Everyone gets a cash refund if the shutdown happens inside the standard refund window, no matter their membership status.
After that, only Select and LaunchPad products carry further protection under the We Got Your Back Guarantee.
Plus members get up to 100 percent back in AppSumo Credits on either tag, for 12 to 24 months depending on their plan.
Non-Plus buyers only get credit on Select products, capped at 50 percent within the first 12 months.
Non-Plus buyers get nothing for a LaunchPad closure past the refund window, at any point.
We learned this firsthand: our own shutdown happened outside both windows, so no credit applied to that purchase.
How long does an AppSumo refund actually take?
AppSumo processes the refund instantly on its own end. The delay, if any, happens on your bank’s side, which typically takes 5 to 10 business days to post the funds.
Our own refund cleared without that kind of wait. The confirmation was immediate, and the money showed up on our card statement within the timeframe AppSumo states.
Is AppSumo Plus worth the annual fee?
Buying volume decides this. Occasional buyers of one or two deals a year should skip Plus and pay full price per deal.
Regular buyers of four or more deals a year tend to break even or come out ahead, once the 10 percent discount and store credit are counted.
The tiebreaker beyond pure math is protection: only Plus Pro Annual doubles your shutdown-coverage window, which matters most to anyone buying Select-tagged deals on a regular basis.
What does lifetime access on AppSumo actually mean?
Lifetime access means you pay once and keep using the tool for as long as the vendor operates and honors the deal.
It does not mean the tool is guaranteed to exist forever.
If the vendor shuts down, gets acquired, or discontinues the product, your lifetime access ends along with it.
What protection you get then depends on the We Got Your Back Guarantee terms above.
How do I know if an AppSumo deal is safe to buy?
No single signal guarantees a deal will last, but a few checks consistently reduce the risk.
Look at whether the founder actively answers questions on the deal’s Q&A tab, and how many reviews the product has.
Also check whether the listing is tagged Select, LaunchPad, or Radar. Select-tagged products get the strongest shutdown protection under the current guarantee.
Buying the tier you actually need today, rather than one you might grow into later, is the other habit that consistently prevents wasted spend.
The Bottom Line
AppSumo is a legitimate marketplace with a refund policy that holds up under real use. Its shutdown protection policy genuinely improved in August 2026.
It is not a guarantee that every tool you buy will still exist in three years. Buy deals from vendors who show up and answer questions.
Redeem codes the day you buy them. Use the refund window as the real evaluation period it is designed to be.
Budget for the fact that some purchases will not work out.
